Hahaha, another one with no kids! Ever ask your kid if they want to sit in the back seat for 3 days, 1 day, or 2 hours for that fact?
If your kid ever says "Yes dad, that sounds divine. Can we keep the windows up, heat on and no snacks please too?", check their temperature and get them to an emergency room cause there's something wrong with them!
Now if it was me and the kids were uncomfortably cramped up, I'd stick them in the camper!
As a matter of fact, quite often, we did do these kinds of short, cramped trips from Michigan to the Western states with our children - with tents. However, we didn't make the decision alone. We were a family and as a family, we talked about it together and layed it out as to the fact that some things may not be perfect (setting up a tent every night in various weather - we had snow, rain and high winds (Kansas) at various times), the long drives, cold (we got snowed out of Rocky Mtn. NP, tossed the wet tent on top of the car and on a whim went down for a very enjoyable unplanned tour to Mesa Verde NP, heat (our first trip was done without air conditioning in the car), not being able to see 'everything', etc. As a 'family' we shared information. Knowing what was in store there were no complaints from anyone.
Years later we got a 13' Scotty trailer but caring about our kids we'd never toss them in the trailer while driving.
Everyone is different, for sure.
