$199 per hour shop labor rate

I was floored today while at General RV. Their new 2018 labor rate charged is $ 199 hr. I had to look twice. It goes up every year. 5 hours working on your rig ... $1000 bucks, not including parts.

And the "tech" is getting what, about $12 to $19 and poor benefits.

I guess that would depend entirely on the region. I know for a fact that in the Michigan and Ohio region, qualified ASC certified technicians get between 20 and 30 bucks an hour, depending on experience and qualifications plus benefits. It's a very competitive market.

Are you talking RV dealers or mechanical, engine, trans, etc? 90 % of the time I've had to return our rig to General RV as they've many times damaged something unrelated to the initial service.

My engine and Chassis are all done by Cummin Bridgeway. I have no complaints about them and their service is great.
  • That's
    1) good to know, if I were ever to consider them for any work, and
    2) OMG!!!

I'm hiring sidecarflip if I need any work on my new diesel puller. :B

For that much jack are they all ASC certified mechanics? I'd want to know up front. That is a bit steep. I retired from Freightliner of Toledo (Now Valley Freightliner and their shop rate is much less, around 150 per hour labor and they are all certified technicians. Not a plug but I'm personal friends with the service manager and I know they do good work, I used to work there and I'm good too.

On top of it, you are working on high tech computer controlled high dollar equipment, not sewer drain valves.

That is correct. Modern engines and drivetrains are all computer controlled and require extensive training to fix them or even diagnose the issue in the first place. Ain't no sewer hose job.

You know the answer to that. They get that for anyone touching your rig. And you get the pleasure of dealing with staff that acts like they don't want you there. One rude person after another.

Not applicable to the dealership I retired from, maybe General RV though. 90% of the business at the dealership is repeat business. happy customers come back, especially when it's fixed right the first time.
