1999 Ford F350 7.3 problem

I've been having a problem with the rpm surging. Example, I can be driving down the road and the rpm will accelerate on its own, or even while idling, it will increase, or run rough for a second, then it evens out again. I have put in a new fuel filter, but still having this occur. I will probably take it in to have it looked at soon, just wondered if anyone else has experienced this? Got a big trip planned in late August,so need to get this fixed. Could it be bad fuel? Your advice/opinions appreciated!
  • Thanks for all of the replies - I appreciate it! Ended up taking it to the mechanic and turned out to be the ICP sensor. Back on the road again, and planning our next trip.
  • I have a F450 with the 7.3 that was doing the same thing, the mechanic said one of 2 things, either a sensor is bad or the wires connecting to the sensor needs to be reseated, it was the wires, sorry I can not tell you what sensor was the problem...
  • I have a 7.3, 2001 and there was a recall on mine concerning the accelerator. Check for a recall that may have been missed.
