2002 Tahoe

ok, next question. will a 2002 tahoe pull a 24 ft pioneer travel trailer, with no problem? The Tahoe has a 5.3L, and has tow package on it.
  • I had a 2000 yukon 5.3 with 3.73 rear and a 25'tt around 5k. It was a good match but that was about as big as i would go. Climbing long steep hills will tax it for sure. Keep an eye on the trans temp. You can use your smart phone and an app such as "torque" if it dosent have a guage.
  • We have an '02 we bought new with the 3.42 gears and towing package. I believe it is rated at 6600. As noted tongue weight will be critical but regardless, I wouldn't tow a 24 foot box irrespective of weight. My experience is the trailer tends to control the Tahoe. Due to trailer weight and the Tahoe wheelbase, wind and passing trucks will keep you on your toes.

  • I have a 2001 Suburban and it didn't tow a 22 ft Wildwood with a 3618 lb yellow sticker weight very well. 60 mph highway and it was working hard. Freeway grades were slow. 2 lane roads 55 mph 3rd gear in tow/haul mode were OK. After a 4000 mile trip I traded the trailer for a smaller one that tows great. Wind resistance from the higher wider trailer seemed to be a big part of the problem.
  • Not enough info. The tow rating could be under 5000 pounds. The axle ratio and trans cooler are important. Those can be confirmed on the RPO sticker in the glove box. Hopefully you have GT4 or GT5 listed and KNP.

Keep in mind that is a 14 year old vehicle. How it was maintained is very important. Flush all the fluids, replace the junk OEM receiver.
  • We pulled a 25' TT with a 2005 Tahoe with the 5.3. It's a capable motor and vehicle but I didn't like 3,500 - 4,000 RPM on hills just to maintain 50 or 55 MPH. With any 1/2 ton vehicle, you will run out of payload (for tongue weight) before you run out of towing capacity. Do your homework with loaded trailer and tongue weights, weigh the Tahoe with full fuel, occupants and gear, and do the math from there.

  • A quick search shows a 2002 Tahoe had a towing capacity between 7700 and 8100 lbs. So yes, unless the trailer is made of lead, it will tow it just fine.
  • "No problem" is subjective.

Depends on what you are expecting...if you expect it to handle and drive like it does unloaded then no...it won't be "no problem"...

However, if you understand and expect the Tahoe to handle different, for the motor to work harder and at higher RPM's than unloaded, and if you pay attention to the set up then-yes...no problem.

The biggest single piece of equipment for towing safely is YOU.

If YOU take time to study towing, hitching, matching the trailer to the truck, researching how vehicle performance is imacted by towing (expect half the normal MPG, and expect 1,000 to 2,000 rpm more than normal operating engine speeds...you will be fine.

    Thanks!

  • It may be OK. Look on the inside of the glove box door for the build sticker with the RPO codes. Find the one(s) beginning with "G" and post it here. That'll tell us what rear end ratio you have and how suitable it is for towing.

Anybody here know the RPO codes for the trailer package?
  • Borderline. Had a 2002 Tahoe and it pulled our Arctic Fox 19B OK. At least on the flat lands. In the hills it was pedal to the metal to maintain 45.
