2008 Jeep Liberty

Have looked for an answer to this but can't find it. Maybe somebody can help.

Does anybody know why you have to disconnect the battery when flat towing?

Thanks in advance.
  • Does the ignition switch have to be in the "ACC" position to unlock the steering wheel?
If so, there is your answer; with the switch in the "ACC" position, the battery will run down in just a few hours.
Many auto manufacturers, in their infinite wisdom, eliminated the "OFF, NOT LOCKED" switch position after the 2006 models. However, many later models do not have a steering lock. Does the 2008 Liberty have it? If not, there is no need to leave the key in the ignition or the switch on, and no need to disconnect the battery. I have heard that Jeep did not update the towing instructions when the lock was eliminated.
  • cuz you need to insert the key to unlock the steering wheel and when you do that certain accessories come alive...probably the clock and maybe some others.

some things to review and/or think about doing to remedy this:

    - IF your 2008 liberty has an UNLOCKED/OFF position on the ignition switch you will not have to disconnect the battery. our 2003 jeep wrangler has such a feature so while we have to insert a key to unlock the steering wheel nothing is powered up when we tow. your '08 lib may or may not. check your owner's manual.

    - the steering wheel on our '10 lib does not lock which means that we can tow it without a key in the ignition which means not having to disconnect the battery. check your owner's manual under Recreational Towing.

    - assuming neither of the above work out for you then you should be able to add a charging line between your MH and your lib's battery. this will keep the battery charged while it's under tow. other's on this forum have done that with great success and they can guide you as to the specifics.

    good luck.
  • ON my 2005 Liberty I had a key cut that doesn't have a chip in it and I just turn it to the first click. That just unlocks the steering wheel and nothing else . I then use the key with the chip as it is also the fob to lock the doors, so I don't have to take the key out every time I stop.
  • That is the first I have ever heard if that . On my 2005 liberty just turn key to first notch put in park transfer case in nuteral.
  • The later Jeeps do not have the wheel steering lock. The 2008 does not have a steering wheel lock. Only 4 wheel drive are flat towable, 2 WD are not. Transfer in Neutral, Transmission in Park, key out of ignition.

That's what I do only I have a key in the ignition that when used to start the Jeep it will shut off as doesn't have the security chip.
  • On my 2007 I just turn to the first click. Only unlocks steering wheel.
