2014 ford explorer

My vehicle is set up to tow already. Curious if anyone here has towed with this vehicle? Manual has it to put in acc mode. I did that and drive for 45 mins and when I got back in the car, the screen said battery save mode, start engine or it will automatically turn off. Question I have is if the acc shuts off, will steering wheel lock too? I suppose if wheel locks, it would be a bad thing.

  • ACC frees the steering wheel just like when you go to start it! Remember how sometimes you need to turn the wheel to get the key to turn? Front wheels need to be able to follow the tow vehicle thru turns etc. Remember when backing the wheels will also want to turn, generally in the opposite direction desired! So if you have to back a little remember to set the towd vehs wheel for the direction of push desired.

The steering wheel needs to be free to turn. You DO NOT want the steering wheel locked when towing it with the MH. That would be bad. Very bad.
  • Mine is a key type system and ACC needs to be on in order to unlock the steering wheel. Not sure how the no key systems work but I would suspect they would use a relay to accomplish the same thing.

  • Our CRV has the NAV system. With charge line, battery still died after 2 hours or so. Added fuse switch to accessory power line. All is well. Make sure your supplemental braking system can get power. Some must plug into the cig/power port to work. Our Invisibrake has it's own power directly from battery.

OK.. Mine is a Limited 4x4. I have towed WITH it, but not towed it. That's the CRV's job. Mine, being fully optioned is a huge power hog. I would install a 10A Toad Charge to cover the current draw.

  • We are towing a 2014 Explorer and although the manual only tells you to start the car every 6 hours to lube the transmission the battery will go dead in roughly 2 hours as you need to leave the key in the acc position. My solution was to run a charge wire and dedicated ground from the motorhome to the car battery.
  • Are you towing WITH the vehicle, or towing it with something else? It's a little confusing
