2015 Honda CRV....... not towable

I'm at the Honda dealer having work done on my 2013 CRV. While waiting I decided to go into the showroom to look at the 2014 cars and kick some tires. I asked the salesperson about the 2015 CRV having the new CVT transmission. He said that is true and therefore will not tow 4 down.

Was he just saying this to sell the 2014? He claimed people are coming in to buy the 14's because of the change in the 15's.

What do you think?

  • Honda is going to CVT (replacing the automatic they developed over past 30 years from a GM licensed design) almost across the board. There will be a few exceptions, but those will be in vehicles Honda has already taken off the towable list for reasons other than transmission technology.

The 2015 model lineup still includes a manual transmission Fit (manual CRV disappeared after 2nd generation). That should be towable unless there is something weird about the new six-speed, or problems with front end construction of Gen 3 Jazz/Fit.

A steel belt driven CVT is not towable on all four wheels, with the increase in popularity in belt driven CVTs in small cars there will probably be fewre flat tow options available.

The Ford hybrid's are power-split CVTs, the CVT feature is provided through a planetary gear set as opposed to a steel belt, this architecture is easier to design for flat tow capability than a steel pusher belt CVT is.

Wonder why they don't all do it that way. Our Escape Hybrid had been great as a toad, CVT and all.

True, in most cases, but NOT all.

Ford's hybrid vehicles (Fusion and Cmax) use a CVT transmission, that is flat towable. Not only is it flat towable, its one of the easiest and most simple auto tranny vehicles to tow 4 down.

No crazy procedures to go through when hooking up, no need to run tranny through specific shift pattern or run engine every so often to lube the tranny when towing. No battery or fuses to disconnect. None of that. Just hitch it up, throw it in neutral and go. Tow as long/far as you want, up to 70 mph, no restrictions (yes, this is with a CVT transmission).

Anyway, back to original subject: If its true, thats really a shame. Honda CRVs are one of the most popular choices for flat towing, will be unfortunate to see yet one more option go away for those of us that want to tow a car behind our MHs.
  • The salesman was correct. NO 2015 AUTOMATIC HONDA product is 4-Down towable any longer. Both the CRV and the Fit have gone to a non-towable automatic CVT transmission.
  • We had a sales person in Southern California that would stand on his head to sell you a car, CALL WORTHINGTON so the sales person will do anything to sell you what he has in stock rather than wait for the 2015 models, and the closer to the end of the year the better deals on the 2014's.

Get the phone for Honda Corporation and call them to find ouy if what the salesman told you is accurate, then you will have the info.

Weather the new Hondas can or can not be towed 4 down I have no info, I have not stopped at a dealler since 2003, and the last Honda Civic we had we traded for a Suzuky Grand Vitara 4X4 stick.

  • The sales person was correct but he probably wanted to sell you a new 2014 also. Anytime a salesmans lips start moving, be careful. :R
