4WD and AWD on a tow dolly

We are considering buying a tow dolly for our Class A and would like to clarify restrictions on vehicles that can be used with the dolly. It is my understanding that no AWD can be towed with a dolly (leaves our my Honda CR-V!)I was wondering if 4WD drive vehicles can be towed on a dolly?
Thanks very much,
  • Crazy Ray did you read the question? Are you towing your CRV AWD four down or on a dolly? The question is can a 4X4 or AWD be towed on a dolly. Dick

Are you towing your HONDA CRV AWD on a dolly?
  • I own a Jeep Liberty, and although it is not setup as a toad, the owners manual states 4 down, 4 up, or driveshaft removed.
  • You are right, the CRV AWD can NOT be towed on a dolly, but can be towed 4 wheels down. What are your reasons for not towing 4 down? I have towed my 2002 CRV 4 down for 12 years without a problem. Just look in the owners manual index under the heading "towing behind a motorhome" and just go to that page and follow the directions for shifting procedure to the letter and you can tow up to 65 MPH with no problem. In my opinion this is better then using s dolly.
As for a 4 wheel drive vehicle that can be towed on a dolly, I have no knowledge of that subject.
  • Nearly every Owners Manual I have ever read on a 4X4 or AWD vehicle expressly FORBIDS towing 2 wheels down UNLESS the rear drive shaft is removed.
To clarify, I have owned Dodge and Chevy 4X4 pickups, Jeeps, Jeepsters, Wagoneers, AMC Eagles, and Subarus.
NONE of them allow two down towing; not behind a wrecker, not for recreation, not for anything unless the rear drive shaft is disconnected or removed.
It even applies to the 1/4, 3/4, 5/4, and 2 1/2 ton vehicles I drove in the Army.
So, in my experience, NO, you can't tow a 4WD vehicle on a dolly.
