Towing 4wd on dolly

Mine is a 4wd. Ford says it can be towed on all four wheels. A question I have is , can I tow it on a dolly if I follow the same procedure as flat towing. Ford says to put in neutral with acc on. Reason why I'm asking is cause I have a dolly and want to go rving but my parts haven't come in so I can flat tow yet.
  • Hi,

So you have the towing brackets to hitch the Exployer to the RV, but not the braking system? What are you towing it with? If the tow vehicle is say 22,000 GVWR and the towed vehicle is say 4,000 pounds, then many states say it is OK to tow a car with less than 30% of the towing vehicle's GVWR. Tow trucks tow vehicles all the time and do not have brakes connected to the tow truck. You just have to be careful and not take any steep mountains.

  • Yes, you CAN tow your 4X4 on a dolly. After you load it on the dolly and tie it down, get under it and remove the rear driveshaft from the rear differential yoke. Put the nuts/bolts/clamps in a plastic bag, wrap the u-joint with tape to keep the bearing caps in place (black electricians tape works perfectly), and tie the shaft SECURELY to the bottom of the body.
then, when you want to use the vehicle, get under there and put the driveshaft back in place. tighten the fasteners firmly.
I used to have a Datsun 4X2 pickup that I had to do that with. It was no big deal back then. But, I was considerably younger. I wouldn't want to do it now!
  • Thanks guys. Appreciate the info. Didn't think about the drive shaft
  • I claim no expertise with any particular Fords, but I agree with the others: towing any 4WD vehicle I've ever heard of on a dolly is a guaranteed recipe for disaster. Don't even think about it. Use a trailer or tow 4 down. Those are your only choices.
  • They are waiting in the seat bracket for brakes. It's a explorer
  • Hi,

My Ford Edge can be towed on a dolly if it was front wheel drive, however the all wheel drive can not. Like mentioned above, the center differential will be torn apart, as only the rear wheels and it's driveshaft will be spinning, while the front driveshafts will be still on the dolly.

Why the wait to get the towing equipment? I was able to pick mine up at my local Camping World about 3 days after placing the order.

Do you have a different front wheel drive vehicle you can take on this trip?

I probably would just take the trip without a toad. It really is not that difficult to break camp and go sightseeing in the RV once in a while.

  • No you cannot! As stated it will tear up the transfer case. Why would you want to if it can be towed 4 down?
  • You don't say WHICH of the dozen or so flat-towable Ford vehicles you have, but generally speaking you cannot tow a 4WD vehicle on 2 wheels. It will tear up the transfer case with only one of the 2 driveshafts spinning.

Your Owner's Manual would give specific requirements to your vehicle.
