$50 Christmas Gift

The problem I have with gift cards is that: I give you one and you give me one. OK, we're even, but what's the point other than the aggravation we each went through to get the cards.
As other posters, I don't have the solution, sorry, but I always believed that the gift should something the person could/would want but would never spend the money on. That's a successful gift.

How about a log grabber, very nifty and useful. log grabber I have the Landmann, love it. Got it for a gift from someone that had some imagination.

If he is handy and doesn't keep a cordless drill with is RV stuff, you can get a decent Black and Decker one for around $50.
If he likes music, how about some CD"S with his favorite music.
Maybe a lawn/beach chair.
If he frequents places where there are mosquitoes get him a Thermacell and an extra box of Butane and the blue pads. The two together with tax will be a little under fifty.
We have given those lots of times for gifts

if he likes to cook, get him some cast iron cookery like pie irons or biscuit baker or waffle iron, etc.
if he is a mechanic, get him a small power tool or set of wrenches.

a good flashlight or table light is always welcome.
a dirt catching outdoor carpet is good, too.

You haven't been gifted by the Queen of Bad Gifts. I spent 10 years receiving gifts that were "one-off" (she purposely got something that was ALMOST what I needed but just off enough that it was useless). In all those years, not one of those gifts were returnable or exchangeable without the receipt. And if you asked for the receipt, you were a horrible person who didn't appreciate all the thought put into your gift...

Heck no, I'll take all those thoughtless gift cards.

As for CampingWorld - I bet you can't find a single thing I would want or need there for under $50.

But the key to any gift giving is to know the person, what they like, what they need that they might not necessarily buy for themselves.

While I agree to your last sentence, I disagree with the rest.

As we get older, the amount of things "we need but might not buy for ourselves" are fewer and, quite often, more expensive than these gift limits allow. For example, those Anderson levelers. While most people with RVs would be happy to get them (because they are more expensive than many people are willing to spend on levelers), they are also more expensive than the limit. Most gifts under $50 are not things a person "needs but they wouldn't buy themselves". If it's under $50, then you're lucky if it's something they haven't yet bought themselves.

Buying off a "gift guide" is NOT putting thought into a gift. It's putting someone else's idea of a good gift into action (and usually that person is a marketer). I can tell you that there hasn't been a gift guide in over 10 years that contains anything I would consider a gift worth receiving - including ones for RVs.

I would far rather receive a generic gift card than anything else. I would be able to buy that one item I've been eyeing quietly. A gift card for CampingWorld would be useless to me - I have everything I could possibly want to buy from a CampingWorld (and I most likely paid less for it). A gas card would be good - as long as it's for a station that I actually have nearby (I don't want to have to drive 20 miles in the wrong direction to get gas before a trip).

If you're going to go for a gift rather than a gift card, then find something that isn't "on the shelf". For instance, how about asking the wife for photos of their vacations with the RV? Then put those photos in a digital frame.

Personally, I like to buy the things for our class C myself. That way I get exactly what I want.So send me any of those unwanted gift cards!

SoundGuy..you will probably end up with a stack of those gift card that people don't like so just for the record I think they are great;)
