6 second garage door break in

A friend sent me an email showing how a burglar can break into your garage in 6 seconds if the bar is not locked. They stick a piece of wood in the top of the garage door between the top of door and the frame. They then use a bent metal rod to hook the emergency release or the cable and pull down. I have the gear drive and drilled a hole at the top front of the runner and put a plastic spot tie through the hole and the hole where the cable is attached. If you have an alarm system they will kick the door in and hide in the garage for the police to come and leave. They have a spotter down the street who tells them when the police have gone.
  • A foot to the door and a determined criminal will be faster than that.
  • This video shows a low cost way to prevent the garage door from opening unless the electric opener is used. I think I would add a simple manual lock out though, for those times when you do need to use the emergency release.
  • I got the same email(burglars must be upset!). I've had mine wire tied for years but a friend showed me a magazine article that suggest screwing in a piece of plywood that hangs down low enough to stop the wire from coming in but high enough to clear the door. Easy extra insurance.
