7 pin connector water issue

I am wondering if anyone has seen this before and if I am doing something stupid. The 7 pin connector on the trailer has a dust cap and I keep it on but it seems to be causing more trouble than it is preventing. I think when it rains, water runs down the cord and pools inside the cap, trapping water and corroding the pins. I have used electrical contact cleaner a few times and tried coiling up the cable a few different ways but water seems to keep getting in. I am tempted to just keep the cap off so there is no water pooling under the cap but I am betting that will just cause different issues. Any thoughts on how to keep the water out.
Thanks

  • I hang mine facing down never had water in it. Still have to clean it up occasionally and use some dielectric grease
  • I tuck mine under the propane tanks - they keep rain form hitting it. I would skip the plug cover.
  • We use one of these:

It mounts on the tongue and the plug goes up inside it to keep it out of the weather.
  • I tuck mine into the rear of the pin box.
High and dry and out of the way until we move the FW.
  • Forget the cap. Squeeze some dielectric grease into the plug and hang it facing down and forget about it.
Maybe also "tuck" it up under something nearby - (frame, propane tanks, whatever.)
  • Have you thought about mounting the dust cap somewhere facing downward? Then when you snap the plug onto it water would drain away. I can't say that I have ever had this problem as I have a fiver and the cord fits into the back of the pinbox keeping it dry.
