You may have two problems now. Getting the wires in the twist locks is where I would start out. Disconnect any wires you connected from the new cord that are involved with the wire nuts. Leave the original wires that were twisted together alone and recap them.
Now connect the tow vehicle hitch or grab a set of automotive jumper cables and connect them that way. A good ground is imperative to start or all bets are off and you can get strange symptoms.
At this point test your running lights and turn signals. If your symptoms have not changed or improved then a good 12 volt test light and a wiring diagram is where you need to go.
You cannot rely on wire colors when buying packages of plugs etc. Electrons are color blind and mfgrs are not consistent.
