In the 1970s handbuilt trucks and RVs were pretty common. I knew a guy at UW. He bought a big old 4 door Dodge sedan. With hand tool he cut the roof off and removed the trunk. With scrap lumber, mostly western red cedar he turned it into a motor home. He quit school, showed me the motorhome and was gone.
One of the great places to see rustic RVs was the National Fiddling Championships at Weiser, Idaho. I went a couple of years ago and the same people were in the audience that were there in the 1970s.
