Yep, pulled in to our long weekend campsite this afternoon here at Carter Caves State Park, KY. We were greeted by a fairly skunky smelling site. Learned from the camper next door that a Skunk got hit by a car and crawled onto our site where it (sadly) expired, leaving behind quite the reminder of its passing...So, we're camping in the country (on purpose), things like this happen... :E The campground is full and we've got no chance of getting another site.Anybody delt with this before? Anything you can do to rid the site of the skunky smell, or do we just have to grin and bear it till nature takes its course?Now, for some perspective , on our last camping trip two weeks ago: One hour after arriving at our campsite at the beautiful Mohican State Park in Ohio... My little girl wanted a slushy at the camp store, and so we walked over to get her one. I was standing outside while the kids played around and didn't notice that my foot was under the side of a bicycle rack... Took a step that resulted in an epic face plant in the concrete. ER visit, broken nose, stitches, lots of bruises and pain... Compared to that, dead skunk isn't to horrible! LOL... :^)

Pour a can of tomato juice over the area. Hopefully, the park owner removed the skunk!!

if you can find the skunk cover it with baking soda. that is what the rangers do where we live.

The campground Hosts or one of the Park Rangers removed the poor creature before I got here. It's gone, it's just left behind lasting aromas. LOL. I might try the Tomato juice or Baking Soda on the area where it's most noticeable if it's still bad this morning. By the time I went inside for the night it did not seem as bad. Perhaps I'd just gotten used to it and just don't notice it. Anyway, a broken nose and stitches didn't stop me from camping. A dead Skunk isn't gonna either! ;)

This is the mixture we use on our dogs when they get skunked and it works great.

Place the fire ring on the spot where it died and get a nice hot fire going. That'll take care of it.

IF you can figure out the approximate area where the skunk died put a mound of baking soda (1 or 2 boxes; be generous) over the area. It prolly wont destroy any vegetation but should neutralize the smell.

Yep. You've a good attitude about camping:).

Someone was skunked about 3000 ft from me in early July; the baking soda worked pretty well for the camper. And his neighbors, LOL.

My neighbor shot a skunk beside my workshop while I was away, with his shotgun. Made a big mess, scattered skunk all over the yard. That smell lingered for most of the summer. :(

Hydrogen peroxide is the only thing that might help a bit.
