A Skunk died on our campsite...

Yep, pulled in to our long weekend campsite this afternoon here at Carter Caves State Park, KY.

We were greeted by a fairly skunky smelling site. Learned from the camper next door that a Skunk got hit by a car and crawled onto our site where it (sadly) expired, leaving behind quite the reminder of its passing...

So, we're camping in the country (on purpose), things like this happen... :E

The campground is full and we've got no chance of getting another site.

Anybody delt with this before? Anything you can do to rid the site of the skunky smell, or do we just have to grin and bear it till nature takes its course?

Now, for some perspective , on our last camping trip two weeks ago: One hour after arriving at our campsite at the beautiful Mohican State Park in Ohio... My little girl wanted a slushy at the camp store, and so we walked over to get her one. I was standing outside while the kids played around and didn't notice that my foot was under the side of a bicycle rack... Took a step that resulted in an epic face plant in the concrete. ER visit, broken nose, stitches, lots of bruises and pain... Compared to that, dead skunk isn't to horrible! LOL... :^)
  • The Dawn liquid dishwashing soap breaks down the oily substance of the spray. The "safe" reaction of the hydrogen peroxide and baking soda chemically neutralize the odor. I've read that this "recipe" was developed by a chemist. Stars101, a previous poster/responder said it had been tested and proven effective by a group of college students. We can vouch for the positive results when used after our Alaskan huskey was sprayed a few years ago. Some also recommend a final rinse of heavily diluted vinegar, but as our son said, she then smelled like an Easter egg coloring party.

Its also been proven that clothespins work..... firmly attached to the nose :B

    Or,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, the skunk!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :B

However, applying the clothes peg does hav some risk!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :E

We tell the younger campers here at the campground:"You may see a skunk or two. Just leave them alone, or they will get even, and you are not going to like what hapopens."
  • I got no advice. I think I'd try to put up with it for a short time, then leave.
  • My sisters dog got sprayed when we were visiting their house last summer. She washed him in baking soda a hydrogen peroxide avoiding his eyes. Worked good unless he got wet again right away in the surf. Was next to a window though and my nephews bedroom stunk for a day.

Good attitude you had to deal with it.

Here is a recipe for dogs that is much better than Tomato juice for use on dogs:

    1 Qt. Hydrogen Peroxide 3%
    1/4 C. baking soda
    2 tsp. dawn dish soap

If you can learn where the skunk died, mix some up and spray it on the area.

Like your attitude about camping. Camp On.

I can vouch for the efficacy of this recipe! My dog got sprayed - then ran into the house and rolled all over on the carpet. I mixed this up, put it in a garden sprayer, and doused the house. Made an amazing difference!!
