AAA and Dualies

A few weeks ago, I was stuck on the side of the road with a shredded inside rear dualie. I called AAA, they called a repair facility and that repair facility called me. After talking with them, they made it clear that it was not AAA policy to change an inside tire on a dualie. The dispatcher called another company not affiliated with AAA and I had to pay $276.

The truth is, AAA has no such policy concerning dual rear tires. The refusal to change my tire on the side of the road was the policy of the service that AAA contracted with in the area I was stranded and the representative of that company mis-spoke.

I didn't know this and I have badmouthed AAA over such a ridiculous policy. I know others here also believe that AAA will only change certain tires on their RV. Not true.

I filed a claim with AAA and they are reimbursing me. AAA explained to me, over the phone, that they insure every tire on the RV and if the tow company won't change the tire or tow me, they will reimburse the insured party. They were very apologetic.

I thought they handled my situation very professionally.

So, in closing, I won't be cancelling my AAA Emergency Roadside Service and they are a company to consider if you're in the market for ERS.

Larry, I'm curious as to why you have both?

We recently switched to CoachNet Premier from AAA Premier. The CoachNet Premier only sets us back around $155 per year and covers all of our vehicles in addition to the motorhome. You might want to check out CN Premier - it's pretty broad coverage all in one package.

Yea AAA (remember that acronym is AUTO ASSOCIATION, NOT RV, etc.) is a decent ERA, but just not designed or set up corporate structure wise for the RV community. It's sort of like the ole saying you need the right tool for the job to do it efficiently and professionally.

  • I recently dropped AAA after being with them for decades ... due to their policy (in my area) of not changing the inner duals of my motorhome.

Why would one with an RV remain a customer of an ERS with various policies across various regions? IMHO, this makes no sense for an RV'er who plans on sometimes traveling to/through various regions or states.

I now have an ERS with the same policies throughout the entire U.S. and, I think, throughout Canada ... that's the way an ERS should be.

I also think it's ridiculous to pay out of my own pocket for an RV tire repair and then have to file a claim with AAA later to get my money back. Life's too short for that kind of stuff.
  • I don’t know a lot about AAA, but I believe they have about 70 regions and no from what I understand not all are setup to haul large or heavy vehicles or to even do tire service…

I posted this earlier it is straight from a AAA document… apparent they are not equipped to ensure tire service or towing for many vehicles…

The club shall provide service to the following:

    • Four-wheeled motor-driven vehicles of the passenger, pleasure or recreational type (vans, campers and motor homes), regardless of license plate designation, if those services can be safely delivered.

    • Dual-wheel campers/motor homes will be provided all services but may exclude towing, extrication/recovery and tire service due to size. Dual-wheel unloaded pickup trucks are provided all services except tire service when special equipment is needed.

what the heck does that mean??? And make no mention to towables here…

I have read many times if you are in another region for some services you might have to pay for them and then seek reimbursement from you home region... but I don't know if that is true or not...

Sounds like a stupid policy for RV service to me and it is not the contracted tower saying this
  • Several years ago I had an inside tire blow. (on I-5 in CA) I called AAA and they were very responsive and sent someone right out. The guy showed up, but didn't have a jack. We used my Motorhome to raise the side of the RV to change the tire. I know that's not a good idea, but we braced the frame once it was off the ground. (whoever owns my old rig, I'm sorry) I did have a spare that time. Now I don't. gulp. I now own both AAA and Good Sam Roadside and haven't had to use either.
  • I had exactly the same thing happen to me on I10 going through AZ on the way home to Calif, inner dually blowout. I have the AAA Premier service and tow my TT with a F350 with an enclosed box with lift gate. The responding service guy said that they weren't allowed to change inner duals on a box truck because of the weight. GVWR is 13K on my rig, but they would on a class C ??? He went ahead and changed it as a favor without charge and a followup call to AAA informed me that there shouldn't have been an issue. It does seem that coverage towing for AAA
is regional and you might get different levels of service depending where you are. I added Coach Net before the next trip and had two service calls for flats in Montana which were handled without incident. I've always had good luck with AAA around home but I don't like arguing with a tow driver about my coverage in the middle of nowhere.
