Just a question for those of you that live in a state where you have to pay an annual tag tax like here in GeorgiaI just paid mine and I have always thought it was high for a travel trailer. Our trailer is a 2008 Rockwood and the value on our tag receipt is 5,850. They have it classified as a trailer. Our tax this year is 293.00. I don't know if that is high cause of the county we live in but nearly 300.00 for a trailer that can't move on it's own and being 6 years old and valued at 5,800 is high I think. What are you paying? I am thinking about contacting the tag office to see if they have rated somehow incorrectly.

The tax for an 06 motorhome in California is $390 a year. You also pay 9.75% sales tax on a purchase even when you trade in.

I would say near $300 per year is a bit steep for a Trailer, In Oregon we pay just over $200 every TWO years for a 32' 5th wheel, cost is by size not value. The best part is 60% of that cost goes directly to the State Parks department.

Sell it and buy a new TT. GA law changed a few years ago. The tax is now charged up front when you buy a new vehicle. You don't pay the Ad Volerm any more after the initial tax, again on vehicles bought new since 2010 (I think, maybe it was 2011).That being said, that does seem high. Our 2009 Motorhome was $350 this year. When we bought it new in 2009, it was $535 the first year. The value of the motorhome is based on the chassis value which I think was at least 3 times the value you said your trailer is valued at (Motorhome's in storage, can't check the registration). I'm sure Atlanta has a higher millage rate than Glynn County (east coast of GA), but that seems high. The last time we registered our 2006 HTT (last year) it was just under $100, I don't remember the value.-Michael

Here in Michigan we pay a 6% Sales Tax (on purchase) then a one time (lifetime) tag of $200. Law just changed to allow for credit on "trade ins". ( Sale price less trade-in difference at 6% sales tax) That way you not paying sales tax on two different vehicles.Happy trails,

I'm in a dilemma, as my new fifth wheel trailer is kept 300 miles away in the North Georgia mountains. I cannot title it in Georgia because I no longer have a Georgia driver's license.

My Alabama license branch wants to inspect the serial number before issuing a title. Can you imagine trying to take a 37' trailer through their parking lot? An Alabama peace officer can inspect the trailer, but it'll never physically be in Alabama. Catch 22!

Alabama's a great place for sales taxes on autos/boats/RV's @ 2%. But they do have ad valorem taxes on autos and RV's. No way out of it.

In Georgia, I'd suggest you check with your county's tag office on the high ad valorem tax. You might check the NADA posted price before you go to the county.

Paying the GA 6.75% tax on front end would be the way to do on some RV's, but it doesn't apply to both motorized Class A's/B's/C's and travel trailers/fifth wheels. I don't remember which units are able to be taxed this way. Laws online are a little unclear, too.

In GA there is a big difference in taxable value and selling price. OP , $5850 is the taxable value on a trailer they are valuing at almost $15,000. How much would you sell your trailer for?

IvyLog is completely correct.The value posted on your tag notice is the 40 % value. The actual fair market value they are looking at is 2.5 times that amount.I believe you can file an appeal with your county tax assessors just like you can on a home or other property you own.They may try to get out of it but by state law it is their job to FAIRLY access the value of any property that is taxable.

In Montana, we pay about $250 the first year, then never have to renew the registration. ALL trailers, regardless of size or type, have PERMANENT license plates. when the title is transferred, the new owner will once again register the trailer, and get new PERMANENT plates.

In Minnesota my trailer tag is around $30.00. But my Ram 2500 was considered a passenger vehicle and the tags were based on the value. It started out around $500.00 the first year and went down(slowly) from there. My new truck is a 3500 and has an actual non-commercial truck plate..$120.00 a year. Go figure.

That would explain it. Our millage rate is less than half yours. I'm pretty sure it is like 22%.

Yes I understand every stae is different that is why I asked mainly for GA residents opinions.
The mil rate is 47.1600 and they have the value of the trailer 5,850. Rated as a trailer with a 12.00 tags fee.

OP, What is your millage rate? Figuring your tax is fairly simple. Value time.4 time mil rate equals tax.
OP, unless you are planning on moving to another state, hearing from those that know nothing about GA's Ad valroem tax laws is not very helpful.
