Ad valroem tag tax

Just a question for those of you that live in a state where you have to pay an annual tag tax like here in Georgia
I just paid mine and I have always thought it was high for a travel trailer. Our trailer is a 2008 Rockwood and the value on our tag receipt is 5,850. They have it classified as a trailer. Our tax this year is 293.00. I don't know if that is high cause of the county we live in but nearly 300.00 for a trailer that can't move on it's own and being 6 years old and valued at 5,800 is high I think. What are you paying? I am thinking about contacting the tag office to see if they have rated somehow incorrectly.

Here in Michigan we pay a 6% Sales Tax (on purchase) then a one time (lifetime) tag of $200. Law just changed to allow for credit on "trade ins". ( Sale price less trade-in difference at 6% sales tax) That way you not paying sales tax on two different vehicles.
    Happy trails,

On the other hand here in MI., A MH has an annual license fee and it is very high. My 93 MH cost us $395 per year and will never go down as long as we own it. We have paid $395 yr after yr. When we trade it for the new TT we will be paying the one time $200. The TT has a value of roughly 3 times the MH.
When we cross our Mackinaw bridge between the upper and lower a MH pulling a car is $20.00 a Truck pulling a TT is $8.00.
  • Just picked our new TT this week. One time State sales tax was same as a car, 3%. Annual property tax ( county ) was 180 +/-. Haven't got town tax yet but it will be about 20.00. City and County property tax is based on value and will go down as value goes down, unless tax rate is raised :(

DMV registration is a totally different fee.

Something is wrong as you pay on the 40% value or $2340 which would require a mil rate of 120 to get. $280 tax and no county has that high a rate. I believe you have the option of paying a one time tax of 7.6% so you will only have to pay a $15 tag fee from then on. You need to go back to the tag office and find out what's going on and your options.

That's not a "tax" - it's the annual registration fee.

Register the same year 1T pickup or MDT tow vehicle in CA and you'll find out your MH registration is dirt *cheap*!!..:S

  • I know you don't want to hear this but here in Ontario I payed $30 for life.

  • Sell it and buy a new TT. GA law changed a few years ago. The tax is now charged up front when you buy a new vehicle. You don't pay the Ad Volerm any more after the initial tax, again on vehicles bought new since 2010 (I think, maybe it was 2011).

That being said, that does seem high. Our 2009 Motorhome was $350 this year. When we bought it new in 2009, it was $535 the first year. The value of the motorhome is based on the chassis value which I think was at least 3 times the value you said your trailer is valued at (Motorhome's in storage, can't check the registration). I'm sure Atlanta has a higher millage rate than Glynn County (east coast of GA), but that seems high. The last time we registered our 2006 HTT (last year) it was just under $100, I don't remember the value.

I would say near $300 per year is a bit steep for a Trailer, In Oregon we pay just over $200 every TWO years for a 32' 5th wheel, cost is by size not value. The best part is 60% of that cost goes directly to the State Parks department.
