Another tire dilema

They are not that good a quality. If he has 15 inch wheels then Maxxis is considered the best of the current crop of ST tires. If he has 16 inch wheels then he is a fool for not installing a quality LT tire. There are hundreds of pages on this subject so search to your hearts content. But with Carliles tell him to expect the same luck he has had so far with tires on his fiver.

Carlisle have a very spotty reputation like all Chinese ST tires.
If, in fact they are load range D then they are NOT 80psi tires...your dealer is wrong.
Load Range D's go to 65 psi..
Load Range E's go to 80.

Based on the RV in your signature line you have ST225/75R15D size tires. The best ST tire available in this size is easily the Maxxis brand M8008. The Carlisle are chinese made and will not give you the same service. Since you are in a jam on leaving ASAP it may be the best option for now, just know that you will have to revisit this issue soon. I just checked the Carlisle web site spec charts and they do not list a ST tire in load range D that has an 80 psi rating. Only the E rated tire has max psi that high. Running an 80 psi tire at 50 psi can lead to overheating of the tire and lessens the weight carrying capacity listed on the tire. If you must do this trip with this tire I would recommend running higher pressure (65 psi) even if the wheel is not rated for it. There is less risk at running over the wheel rated psi than running the tires 30 psi below max. The best solution is to check the wheel for the rating and run the proper sized tire at the recommended pressure. The tire store is not doing you any favors on this one IMO.

Anything but carlisles. Maxxis is best though.

Try Continental Vanco 2 tires. In a post just recently Continental stated that these were suitable for trailer use and are rated to 99MPH and are a LT or heavy load tire in 15". Will probably be my next set of tires for my trailer once the Maxxis are done.

The Carlisle has been redesigned and upgraded to include a full cap… it is unknown how well they will hold up because the new version hasn’t been around long enough and they are now built in China that could be offsetting qualities IMHO…

Using lower air pressure will not hurt the tire or cause it to run appreciably hotter providing the air pressure is adequate for the load ( check the load/inflation charts from the mfg. website) the maximum PSI allows for the maximum load… if your trailer requires max PSI of a LR E (80 PSI) tire now, it was grossly and dangerously overloaded with a LR C (50PSI) tire before… the tire is designed for a given amount of deflection… over inflating will reduce the contact patch and braking ability and reduce tread life…

On the Vanco 2 tires what was posted may have been a bit of a understatement (not necessarily wrong, just understated)… I am researching that a little farther myself and Continental…

If the tire dealer doesn't know the difference between a load D 65# pressure and a load range E 80#, is this someone you should be doing business with? I think not.

Running under MAX PSI will not hurt a darn thing. Weigh your tires and use the weight chart associated with the tire and air accordingly. GY Tech Support said to add 5psi to the chart when up sizing tires.

Did some more research on your TT vs your tire situation. Your TT has a 8k GVWR. JJBIRISH is correct that you could run that E rated tire at 50 psi (2150 lbs) and still have the load capacity you need and the C rated tire would in fact be sufficient for your TT.

As far as the Continental Vanco 2 tire is concerned I found nothing on their webpage indicating that this utility/van tire was acceptable for use on trailers and I would not recommend it for that purpose at this time. Perhaps Continental will approve it for that use in the future and possibly give folks another alternative but there is no evidence that they have done so based on their web site.
