Another tire question

Ok I had my first blowout this camping trip. I am running 205/75/r14 Goodyear marathon. They are 4 years old now. I normally run them at 45psi. Should I go ahead and replace them all or can I get some more life out of them? Tread depth is almost new. Should I go back with Goodyear or another brand? Thanks Michael

  • Here is the pic, there is not much room between tires so I don't think there is anyway to go up in rim size.

What GS plan is that? The normal Emergency Road Service plan does not pay to replace a tire. It will pay for the labor and trip out to replace the tire but not for the tire itself. Is there another plan that I am not aware of?

When you say you had a "blowout" what "exactly" happened?

In my experience of about 6 "blow outs" over the years:
    1. You feel like your truck just ran into a gust of wind and have just a sense of slowing down but nothing where you feel the truck is going out of control.
    2. you look in your rear view mirrors and you will generally see a small cloud of smoke.
    3. You then just let off the gas and drive the truck and trailer over to the side of the road where it is safely out of traffic.
    4. turn your flashers on
    5. Go out to inspect the tires and generally you will see a tire that has started to shrewd and sometimes you will see where your fender well has been hit by the shredded pieces of tire. Usually the damage just requires you to replace the little fender skirt. But, I have heard of more severe damage to the underside of the trailer.
    6. I always save the blown out tire if possible to take back to the dealer I bought it from to see if the company's warranty will pay for a replacement. My experience with Good Year's tires warranty has been great as far as just replacing the tire at no cost to me. I also have the Good Sam plan that will replace the tire at no cost.
P.S. After # 3. Pull over as soon as possible avoiding the amount of damage the blown tire will cause to the RV.
  • I just installed a set of Hankook RA08 in size 195r14; more capacity, same OD, and 8 ply load range D; very happy so far.
  • Kuhmo Radial 857

I put these on this past summer and could tell a significant difference immediately. Trailer tracked better and less side to side sway when we encounter high winds in Colorado. They have the highest load rating at 2271 lbs per tire and 99 mph speed rating....if you want to risk it
  • I am of the opinion that all ST tires are basically the same - and do not live up to my expectations. I agree on replacing at 5 years. I would also suggest running max PSI (which is 50 on my 14" boat trailer tires).

If you can fit 15" tires under your trailer, you should increase your carrying capacity, and will likely have slightly better luck.

For safety and peace of mind---replace all your tires. People can get 4 to 6 years out of a set of tires but after 4 yrs. you are playing at the******table in Las Vegas. I change all tires at 5 yrs. regardless what shape they appear to be in unless I have a tire problems, then I throw them away right away. The safety of your family and your RV in my opinion is paramount.
    As previously stated:
    1. Switch to the largest size rim 15' or 16, the highest rated capacity E or G that will fit on your RV. I like the Goodyear "G" rated tire on a 16" rim.
If you choose to keep rolling the dice, be sure you have Good Sam Emergency Road Side plan.
  • replace them all and get a bigger size and a high load range. Maxxis is the best tire out there for trailers and I would go with them.
