Ants IN the toilet

They were probably attracted by the antifreeze in the toilet. You will be finding them for a while.

I would get some Ortho Home Defense and do a good general spray around the floor edges, under cabinets, etc.

Sorry I haven’t replied sooner but wifi here is a bit sketchy. First a huge THANK YOU! for all your replies. They are very much appreciated.
Secondly, some answers to your questions. The unit was stored full of RV anti-freeze that included the toilet and all the waste valves were closed. The seal on the toilet seems to be solid as there is no change in the water level over night.
We stayed outside Venice, FL for one night before coming to Sanibel. We did hook up the water but didn’t hook up the waste line. We’ve just now discovered that that RV site admits to having red ants. I didn’t see any while we were there but perhaps they found us. Two nights later the ants were in the toilet.
I like the black tank idea but can’t see how they got inside the toilet. This morning I found an ant in a glass that I was filling with water. Earlier we found one in the bathroom sink. This would seem to suggest that they got into the main water line but I have no idea how that could happen.

You never did answer Terryallan's question about the toilet seal. If it is good there is no way the ants could enter thru the black tank or the water line or the vent.

We had an infestation of ants and used an aerosol can (bomb) to kill the ants. Next day there were hundreds of dead ants, mostly on the floor.

Sounds like a bunch of Smart Ants to me. Who wouldn't hitch a ride from Ontario to spend the winter in Florida. lizzie

My Grandma in NC called a certain type of ants piss ants. Maybe you got some of them. :)

We picked up millions of ants at a camping spot (a one night stay). They got in the cat food. We killed and cleaned up area infested. Upon returning home the next day we found the ants in the same spot you did - in the toilet.

It was summer time in the desert so very hot. Expect they had infested the TT and went were there was water to escape the heat. Cleaned them up again and we were ant free.

Never seen ants IN the toilet before, but a couple years back, my TT did pick up an Argentine ant infestation while out in California/Nevada/Arizona on a trip. (Argentine ants are especially small black ants, and not native to North America.)

After trying ant baits and sprays, I got rid of them by sprinkling about 8 ounces of food grade diatomaceous earth in the "basement" where it was generally dusty anyway and in the area under the furnace and where the plumbing runs. DE works only when kept dry, as these areas are, and where it is normally kinda dusty/dirty and not kept spotless by normal housekeeping. You might try it.

And while we're at it, I bought 10 lbs of DE (since the shipping was more than the stuff itself) for use around the rancho, and I probably have 8 lbs of it left, in case anybody'd like some. S&H is your dime.

Ants are looking for water. We get ants at our sticks and bricks a couple of times a year and there is always a water source nearby.

Get a bottle of Terroant, and put several squares of aluminum foil near the ant infestation. Pour the Terroant out onto the foil and the ants will find it and will take the Terroant back to the nest.

Getting the bait back to the colony is the only way to impact the problem. Do not remove the Terroant until all of the ants are gone, they will pack off the bodies of their dead comrades.

If you watch the ants, you will see a trail that will go back to the colony, they leave a marker when they find a source of water or food, and they all use the same route.

Terroant is nontoxix to humans or pets.

Ants. You can't keep them out. About twice a year I spray along the edges where the walls meet the floors with Ortho Home Defense Max. I also spray along all the slide seals inside and out. And I give a good coating on the screens below the roof vents. They may get in but they will not live for long.

At the house we have carpenter ants that like the camper and pyramid ants that like to bite us humans. I spread a granular insecticide around the perimeter of the yard and make an extra trip around the camper.
