I always have a list, taped to the inside of a kitchen cabinet. It includes things to bring along; and also things to do to the house before we leave (depending on the length of the trip) So getting ready really doesn't require much thought anymore - just a matter of checking items off a list. And for the most part (if we forgot something) - it's not like we don't encounter WalMarts along the way.
