Anybody ever use a Stinger?

I have a project that I think one of these would work great. Just wanted to know if anybody ever used one or seen one in use. In 40 years I haven't seen one on the road so they must not have sold many? It would be easy for me to copy if I had something to go by.

  • Google "slimp wheel" to get some more idea's. It's a really interesting concept but there must be a reason they arn't used anymore.

Why not just build a reinforced receiver hitch and use WD?

Because this setup would work way better. My car can "pull" and "stop" just fine. It just can't carry the weight. That is why these things were invented for cars just like mine. It will carry the load.

I thought about airbags but I think this would work much better because it carries the load. All the car has to do is pull.

I understand the logic. Just be careful, I read somewhere that the tongue dolly could tend to try and push the rear end around as it follows groves in the pavement.

I think a WD hitch using the old set up technique of achieving equal squat would apply to your car. That's why they use to set those hitches up with equal squat on all four wheels, that would project the force of the tongue weight to all the wheels of the car, and would probably only add 100-200 lbs of load per tire....I think the old calculation was 25% on the front axle, 50% on the rear, and 25% projected back to the trailer axles when this technique is used.

But, people towed with the dolly for years and it would in the very least be an effective way to tow a heavy trailer.

Keep us posted on the status of your project! Looks very interesting.

    Thanks!

  • Hmmm, no safety pin in the latch on the trailer. The hole is there for a reason.

  • This reminds me of the trailer dollies sold many years ago that enabled cars to pull house trailers. I even remember one being used in the 1950's movie "Long, Long Trailer".
  • It's made by Stinger. But they are out of business according to one of the web sites I went to. :E Maybe there is a reason for that. :B

As far as the pivot. Great minds think alike. :) I was thinking the same thing. I would make it out of round stock and put limit stops on it so it would not hit the frame. But maybe it is so close to the rear tire that it won't load the tire that much? Much like a tandem axel trailer. I just don't know?
  • Looks like a manufacturer label on top. Can you read it in a blowup of your picture?

Looks like that thing would have to swivel to avoid destroying the tires. But I can't see any way for it to swivel from the picture.

It SEEMS a little like a trash compactor. Takes 200 lb.s of trash and turns it into 200 lb. of trash :)

LOL, I know what you're saying Skip. And in 99% of the cases I agree. But I have a 56 Chevy Sedan Delivery that I would like to tow my race car trailer with.

Sure I have two diesel pickups that I can use but I would really like to use my 56 to do this. I really think this would fit the bill. It's got the power :) and the brakes to do it. I just don't want to put dump truck springs under it and ruin my ride to do this. Also the frames on these cars are VERY sketchy to do something like this. :E

You've been around awhile; have you ever seen one of these trash compactors Skip? :B
