I learned on irv2 that you don't "debate" the old-timers with lots of posts. You get banned.:h
I'm a member of a gun forum. Being new to rifles, I had a negligent discharge, IN THE HANGAR. Without going in to details, no harm was done. I've NEVER seen anyone on marlinowners.com get hateful or nasty with anybody.
I felt SO guilty and embarrassed, but I told my story on that forum. Not one single person told me how stupid I was, or flamed me in any way. But instead, it brought out a lot of "well, let me tell you what I did once" stories. One of the moderators even brought it back to life after it sort of "died out" for a while for the safety reminder to us all.
Anyway, I told this on irv2 because I got flamed for something (don't even remember what now)so petty it was stupid. I got harsh email/warning from one of the moderators. A couple months ago, I got permanatly banned for a "religious, derogatory" remark. I got the email warning, when I asked about it, I just got banned.:)
I still go there once in a while as a guest, to read some of the comedy.
That happens here also!

Thanks, John & Angela, for bringing up the racism and monoculture, and D.E.Bishop for bringing up the hatred of some parts of the US.
What bugs me is the attitude of 'my culture / my way is the only right one'.
This can come up in anti-Mexico or anti-California rants, or in rants about how someone goes about buying an RV. In the past few days I have been yelled at here for thinking I should be able to test drive a used rig before buying -- and for even speaking to a seller who doesn't allow test drives. I got yelled at on both sides.
I'm not ssying that's as bsd as racism :). But I think it stems from the same mindset. Different = bad. And I agree that it might be an extra turnoff to us younger RVers.
And yes, it is weird and creepy how white this place us. Not like real life.
I love the trip reports, and the anazing depth of knowledge that many people here share. But I'd like to see the culture here change a bit, and I agree that looser moderation would help.
I am getting more understanding of how different RVing is in Australia. Initially people were judging by what they liked or experienced in NA, which in many cases is irrelevant to us. - 1971duster340ExplorerMy first stop is the "newest" posts and I can expect 2-3 pages, maybe 70 Subjects on average, daily. I've been registered for 13 years and was lurking even earlier.

It's remarks like this that makes me not want to come back, a racist remark! - leeperExplorer

Newbies learn then go off and find 'friendly/chatty/fun forums. This really is not one of them where 'social fun chat' about rv'ing is really around, mostly tech type questions etc. that I have seen. Some fun posts but being a very knowledgeable rv'er close to 20 years on the road there really isn't new info for me on this board. Tire debates, truck debates hold no interest :) and one big plus on this forum is the CG info people post or if you have a question about a cg, someone who was there will chime in and give you great info...other than that not much holds my interest on this forum anymore.
But I hang around and check in but don't post as much anymore. I also noticed this forum is stagnate now. - CKNSLSExplorer

That gets really tiring.
That's another reason...any post with the word "California" in it gets bashed. Another thing that gets done over and over and over again...... - toedtoesExplorer III

That gets really tiring. - D_E_BishopExplorerI will admit to being one who can get snarky. Usually it is to the folks that demean and condemn everything about California. Almost as much to grouches that tell to do a search, but mostly it is to those who know a subject better than anyone and never tell you how to solve or correct the problem.
I try and be inventive when I am faced with a problem and if I ask it here, I usually get great responses. I have posted sometimes, rudely when I post a way of doing something and the experts chime in and tell everyone that it should be done their way, or have improvements to how they would do it, without even taking a good look at an idea or method of doing a task.
Something that really burned me was when I posted a way of using a hole saw to make a hole in the roof for the antenna where there was an irregular existing hole and no place to drill a pilot hole. I have been making jigs to do that for probably 40 or 50 years, but the replies were from it's unsafe, the hole saw will bind, to you should use at least a 2'X4" board for the jig and get two more people up on the roof to hold the 2"X4". They had never tried my idea but knew intuitively that it wouldn't work or would be unsafe.
I use to respond to the snarks but pretty much tried to stop of late. Many times I just pretend they didn't post anything and emailed the OP with a solution or repair manual and even an original thought of my own. I get a lot of thank you notes back from folks.
I also like to tell people with problems and to which someone like SCjeff or Chris Bryant has given a correct answer, that they are guys that are very experience and have great ideas or carefully researched answers.
At only 18 years of self-contained RVing I still consider myself a newby and ask for help here often, I hope the Forums continue for awhile longer. When I turn 80 or if the health gets much worse, I'm giving the Adventurer to the DGKs in the hope their Mom will let them use on their own.
TIA for letting me vent.
David
