Awning Pulling Gutter Away from RV -- Best way to ReAttach?

This is on a TT, but the same problem could occur on any RV with awnings, so I am posting this under General RVing Issues.

In the pic below you can see the problem. The tension from the awning, which is attached to the rain gutter, has pulled the gutter + awning anchor away from the side of our RV.

With the awning in the fully retracted position, the tension it applies to the gutter is such that it requires much more effort to push the gutter back down against the RV wall than is required when the awning is extended out from the wall, as it is in the photo. This of course is the reason the problem has manifested.

What would be the best way to re-attach the gutter? Due to the outward pull of the awning anchor when the awning is retracted, reattaching it with caulk would not last long. I'm thinking to use some stainless steel screws plus some kind of caulk, but I don't have any idea what I would be screwing into. FYI, the TT is a 2011 Jayco 256RKS.

Does anyone have any experience repairing this problem in such a way that the repair will hold? Pic of problem below.

I am also thinking that once a repair is completed, that I will try to leave a tiny bit of slack in the awning when retracting it in future, to try to avoid the gutter being pulled away again.

  • I'd try to determine *why* they are pulling away before doing a fix. It is possible that water is getting in there, making the wood behind it go bad. then, as mentioned, if the wood isn't bad, you may need to use bigger screws, or use something to get better bite. Finally, I'd be using silicone or similar both between the gutter and the trailer wall, followed up by a bead of it along the top, after its all in place.

Get on a ladder with awning out about 6" (so you can have room to screw)and take rubber trim off and re screw the screws in. If they are loose add something to the hole, toothpick with glue for wood or piece of thin copper wire for alum ,and tighten.
Go all around trailer cause most will be a bit loose.

    Good idea, thanks.
  • I need recommendations on exactly what type of caulk to squeeze under the gutter before trying to reattach it -- preferably a caulk that is sticky and thus will help hold the gutter in place, as well as sealing it from moisture.

Have you checked behind the gutter where it's pulled away to see if there are screws back there that have pulled loose? Did you have gutter installed? If so perhaps you could take it back to the installers and have the problem rectified.

Also you might check for any water intrusion into that area that has softened any wood that the screws attach to.

Thanks, no haven't yet looked behind the gutter -- not going to be easy to see under there, but I'll give it a try.

No, I didn't have the gutter installed. I bought the TT when it was 3 years old, and I'm almost 100% sure that the gutter is factory equipment.
