Awning retraction

My awning does not retract as snuggly as it used to. Sometimes we have to push on the frame arms to get it to finish going up. Is their any type of way to adjust it? Spring tension, etc?
  • The Screws are supposed to keep the outer edge of the Fabric from walking along the Groove in the Roller Tube. They may not even be installed on Your Awning.
DO NOT attempt to re align the actual Ends of the Awning Tube.
If the Fabric has moved along the Tube ,You will be able. To tug it one way or the other while the Awning is extended and in the lowest position.Just keep moving the fabric until everything aligns properly when it retracts. Then secure the Fabric with a Stainless Steel Screw at each end. Or just figure on making this No Tools adjustment from time to time!
  • this happens a occasionally to mine - maybe once every other season,

with my awning open i usually give it a gentle tap with a rubber hammer (where the power awning fabric/cover attaches to the coach) to shift the awning in the proper direction (usually less than 1/2 an once at the most).
  • I recently had a similar problem with our electric awning. I seemed to be straining when retracting, thought the motor was failing. I needed some unrelated work done so had the service facility check it. It took only three turns on the spring and it work perfectly now. As in the warning above, don't mess with the spring tension unless you know what you are doing. Those springs are wound tight and can cause serious injury. Let someone who knows what they are doing have at it, money well spent and only takes a few minutes.
  • Caution- do not attempt to remove end caps unless you have read the manual. There are torsion Springs in the tube and when they unwind can cause serious injury unless you have stops in place.
  • Thanks, Therink. I guess I've been a little afraid to try anything and have springs shooting out all over the campground, so I haven't removed the end caps to see if there might be adjusting screws or something like that.:) I hadn't considered your idea. Thanks again.
  • It is possible that the awning fabric has become misaligned in the roller track or the sidewall track. This condition can cause the awning arms to bind when retracting. Assuming that your awning arms aren't bent or damaged, I would try removing the set screws on the ends of fabric where it meets the sidewall groove and slide the fabric 1/2" one way or the other until it closes properly and then resecure the set screws.
I have had to !make this adjustment on two different RVs.
