How long ago is - "Michelin used to compensate owners...etc."
Regardless - it speaks well of a first class company!

Michelin had a (recent) problem with BFGs and took good care of the owners,
with a recall - and replacement.
When BFGs (Michelin's 2nd tier tire line) weren't available they authorized
replacement by (more expensive) Michelin tires.

BTW - maybe the following ties in to the tire line HB referenced, as well as "kedanie's" comment:
Prior to Michelin producing their own tire treatment products, Aerospace 303 Protectant was the *only* acceptable tire treatment.
Michelin would *void* a tire warranty if an owner admitted to using ArmorAll..:(
