Big Cities, what areas are safe?
I don't want this to be a thread about Second Amendment rights, or how big of a shotgun is needed to be safe. And I don't mean for this question to have any racial implications. It's just a question...

Those type of programs are more alarmist than what it really is, most of the gang members will be asleep in the early morning, they start steering in the afternoon and conduct most of the business in the early evening and through the night, Oakland is on the other side of the bay, in San Francisco itself you will have areas of gang activity.
If I a am going to stay in one of the big towns for some time, and plan on going out at night I go to the local police station and ask them where it is safe and where not to go, they always give me the areas to avoid, I also use common sense and look for individuals with ill fitting clothes and tattoos standing around on corners.
Most gang members are more concerned with the rival gang than you, if you stay in the areas where the tourist go you will not have trouble, I do not want to frighten you but you have gang members in the town where you live, the bloods and the crips and the ms13 ( mara salvatrucha) are already operating where you reside, so is the Mexican cartels.
It is a cancer that has spread everywhere in the USA, some people notice it some are oblivious to it until something happens and then they panic.
Go about your travel and enjoy the areas in San Francisco, you will be safe.
