Great input, thank you all.
Our interests are in museums, historical places, Mom and Pop type restaurants, and significant engineering venues. Like the Golden Gate Bridge, China town, etc.
We're small town folks, but we're not clueless. We do look and watch for signs of concern. Concertina wires on top of chain link, bars on windows, vacant buildings, gang graffiti, and so on.
We ask locals for their input on areas to avoid.
Turing around and exiting an area that doesn't feel right is spot on, and it's an option that we already utilize.
Google Earth doesn't really show much as far as crime indicators, but that's a good suggestion. And I agree, that small towns too can have unsafe areas.
If you were coming up Seattle (we go there about once a year) I could tell you three or four areas to avoid. But if you avoided Seattle totally just because it's a Big City you would miss some great venues. Like the ferry boats, Pike Street Market, the Museum of Flight, etc. etc. etc.
Thanks again for your input.
All I can add is park in well lit areas and don't leave any valuables in your vehicle..
There are opportunist thieves even where one least expects it,,such as parking lots in shopping centres..
