Google knows. "Dangerous areas of.. city name"
Tried a few areas (Google) I'm familiar with in Los Angeles and Orange Counties (CA). Google didn't do too well - lots of "good" lumped in with the bad, and vice-versa.
Way too general - especially crime by zip codes.
Ex: Maybe your college football team is playing USC - the University of Southern California - also affectionately known as the:
University of Spoiled Children (mega bucks to attend) -and-
University of South Central (it *is* there!).
If you were to visit this highly acclaimed bastion of higher education and football and/or local venues in the same area - stay in the immediate university area, LA Coliseum, Sports Arena, museum, etc. (parking lots)!
Stray - to save a buck (or?) and you are in never-never land!
Which means - you never, never want to be there!
(And, you *will* catch-on pretty quick!)
Most likely you will passing through "bad areas" on a freeway or Interstate.
No reason to be off the freeway on surface streets in those areas - there sure aren't any campgrounds there!..:S
Use common sense!
If it doesn't *look* good - it probably isn't - drive on...;)
