I don't limit myself to only one type of place and do try to find the good of wherever I am. I mean what would be the point of those maps filled with all the states/countries visited if I only sought out what I already know?
Anyway, how to stay safe in a big city as I see it:
Be aware of your surroundings.
Feel uneasy? Turn around and walk back the way you came.
Mass transit is not inherently "evil". Sit near the conductor or bus driver and a touch of officialdom will oversee you.
Stay out of ill lighted areas unless there are lots of people around you.
Try not to look like a tourist. Read before you get there and then you don't need to carry voluminous tour books that distract you from your surroundings.
Those basics have served me well wherever I've lived on this planet.
The only time I've ever felt endangered was in a suburb of Paris, walking to a Sofitel with another woman at 1:00 AM . Spent too much time admiring the symmetry of pruned trees, talking amongst ourselves and wandering on to moonlit deserted streets thus negating my own street rules.
Fortunately, I've a good command of polite AND gutter French and that mixed with a sense of humor got us safely to the hotel with an unexpected escort. The escort was the guys who had accosted us in the first place, LOL.
