Bird nest in heater

This is a new one for me. Neighbor next door said he saw a small bird going into the opening for my furnace. I took a look at it this morning and sure enough the intake port was plugged up with bird nest materials. I haven't put the mud dauber screens on yet as I had planned. I raked a bunch out with a wire and still didn't get it all so I took the cover off and found the squirrel cage blower was 1/2 full also. Ended up taking the housing apart on the blower and cleaning it all out. What a mess. Surprised that one of those little bugger could do all that. Glad I found it. Shine a flashlight into yours and see if they've been there.

  • Birds are VERY industrious when it comes to nesting :B

Check fridge vents----especially roof if you have one

Birds LOVED to set up house keeping in my pin box (3 occasions/1st one had made it as far as 'furniture/kids room/Daddy's spot :B )......I have an old pillow I stuff inside when not hooked up
  • The fitted bug screens sold for furnace, water heater, and fridge vents would also keep birds out.
  • I've heard of it and may have had it happen. When we first bought ours the smoke alarm went off when the gas came on. Found plastic and wood and also straw in the front furnace.
You may have to sit til the eggs hatch. :) A strong we dry vac should be able to suck out the nest later. Be sure to not let any straw etc stay in ther.

My brother has had birds build a nest in his pin box too. He went away for a weekend. Pulled the 5th wheel for 200 miles when he got back home the little birds were still in there and the mom went back to feeding them. Eventually, the flew away on their own.
