How do you function at all without reading your mail? What good is it to get mail if you don't read it? Suppose you inherited a million dollars but had to contact your lawyer to claim it in a limited time frame? I am not talking about a scam but the real deal. You can go paperless with most businesses, but what about DMV notices?

Yes, you can disappear from the mail system but then the world will think you no longer exist which I expect you will find it even more inconvenient than shredding your own mail.

Yes, absolutely I must have an address in order to function in our society as you described. Yes, I have bank accounts, credit cards, vehicle registration, driver's license, insurance, etc.

But I really don't "want" an address - I'm simply forced to have one. But given an address, I don't want to receive any mail - period.

Thanks. Yes, I'll check out the "no forwarding address" idea - may be the solution I'm looking for. Re "important" mail. I haven't received "important" mail in years. In my case I don't know what that would be. As I mentioned, I do all my "important" business online and have no need for snail mail and USPS.

My ole’ friend “Bubba” will shred your mail for .01 per item. His only requirement is for you to provide your SS#, DOB, and any and all credit card applications. At least his fee seems almost reasonable!

To insert an envelope in a shredder? Oh, maybe 10 cents for 10 seconds "work". I mean really, what is that task worth? Certainly not a $1 or more!

I get these pesky credit card offers, I just take the return envelope and fill it with their T&C that does not have my return information and send it back to them. They pay for postage. Think of it as a gift that keeps on giving. :B

I don't see the problem here. I believe you want no mail, that's an easy fix. You just have your friend tell his carrier, or write unknown or doesn't live here, on mail addressed to you at that address, and that he doesn't have a forwarding address for you.
The carrier then enters you into the "system" as MLNA or moved left no address. With automation as it is now in the post office, that should stop most mail addressed to you from getting to the carrier. It would be returned to the sender as MLNA, or just recycled if it's bulk mail. What might get through would be returned to sender as MLNA by the regular carrier. A few pieces could still get delivered if the regular is having a bad day, or there's a substitute carrier, but it shouldn't amount to much.
It's probably not that wise to just stop all mail, although what
I described above would do that.
