Black Tank Chemicals

I have used the Thetford liquid and it does not seem to dissolve all the waste. What does everyone else use and does it work for them. I dry camp and this is after 4 days. Am I expecting to much? :h

  • Water only. Chemicals only serve to mask the odour and THAT will occur after a week of use/travel regardless. If you are stationary, no smell anyway.

After dumping, I put 10 seconds of water in my tank. That'll either disolve everything or at the very least ensure that all flows easily down the ol'slinky when I dump. And, I use normal toilet paper and personal wipes and it all goes down into the tank.

You say you are dry camping, so I'm guessing you are conserving tank space by using as little water as possible when flushing? Unfortunately, less water makes dissolving waste and TP a bit more difficult. My suggestion would be to start doing some extra flushes the day before you plan to leave, getting some extra water into the tank. Shoot to get it so that it's at least 3/4 full on departure morning. That will give you a better chance of having stuff properly dissolve before dumping.
  • supper high fibre diet, with some crown royal and suicide chicken wings and you won't need to worry about things breaking down.

    use this before flushing
just remember to wash it before making a smothie after

  • Six years and four RV's later, never used anything but water. Use GEO method.
  • Basically, water dissolves the waste and the chemical attempts to deoderize the act of water dissolving the waste. More water usually works better than most anything else. We have not used chemicals for 30 or so years not. We just put a cup of calgon water softener and one cup of cheap liquid laundry detergent in the tanks and that does the job with the water added. Remember these tanks are "holding" tanks, not "septic" tanks. With a black tank full or nearly full, most everything will wash down the drain when you dump and rinse. Just takes a little getting used to how it all works.
