Blue Ox support

I bought a new trailer Friday and decided it was time to upgrade my hitch. The dealer that I bought the trailer from sells Blue Ox (which is what I wanted) so I requested the 2.5" shank. The salesman said he didn't know if they made one since no one ever asked for one but he went to the parts guy to ask.

He came back and said that they made them but it was an additional $216.00. Since I'm not taking delivery until Saturday I let it drop and told him I'd settle for the 2. I shot Blue Ox an email late Friday eve asking why the cost for the 2.5 was so high. Before noon Saturday I had an email from Blue Ox saying they would swap the 2 for a 2.5 & all I would have to do is pay the return shipping.

I forwarded the email to the dealer who promised to find out if the parts guy priced it on top of the 2" or what. I'm hoping that they get it sorted out by Saturday so I don't have to do the exchange.

Either way Blue Ox was on top of the issue even on the weekend and offered a very reasonable solution. I'm hoping the hitch proves to be as good as their customer service!

What tongue weight did you have and what bars are you using. I know mine is supposed to be 940 dry. When I go for the install Saturday I'm going to make sure that they weigh it and see what the tongue weight really is. I'm wondering at what weight over 1000 do you go to the 1500 lb bars.

The tongue weight was between 1,000 empty and 1,040 lbs max. I could've still went with the 1,000 lbs bars and been ok, but we went with the 1,500 lbs bars. It rode just fine even with the tongue as light as 1,000 lbs. Our current trailer is around 1,100 max and it pulls nicely with the 1500 lbs bars.
  • Just got a text from the dealer, Blue Ox is shipping them the 2.5 and they are handling the exchange. I should be all set when I pull out of there with the new trailer on Saturday.
  • I just went through the same situation of swapping a 2 for a 2.5. I called and they had the 2.5" shank at my door before the swaypro arrived at the dealership. They paid for shipping both ways, excellent customer service!!!

I haven't had a failure yet, but I can attest to their great support. At the tongue weight I was running at the time, I had my choice of two different sized bars. After quite a few conversations, they made a recommendation for me and let me know if we couldn't get the hitch dialed in with those bars then they would send out the other size. A lot of other companies would've made me purchase the new bars. Thankfully their recommendation was correct and we got the hitch setup correctly on the first attempt. Great product, priced right, and great service.

If you get the 2.5" you can only use it in 2.5" receivers. If you get the 2" you can use it in 2" receivers and easily adapt to 2.5" hitches. Just something to think about in case you ever find the need to pull your trailer with a vehicle that doesn't have a 2.5" receiver.

I though of that and with the 2.5 my brother can no longer borrow my trailer:B.

Seriously though, with the sleeve there is some play between the sleeve and the receiver and then there is play between the shank and the sleeve. Over time the metal of the sleeve is soft enough that the play has caused the sleeve to no longer be square and the pin hole is slightly elongated. I'm hoping that with the 2.5 that there will be less slop in the overall connection.

  • I'm very happy with my Blue Ox and the company. I've had 2 of the retaining pins go bad, and they have shipped me replacements, no questions asked.
