Boil Water Alert

After arriving at the CG and getting set up yesterday, I went to pay the fee in the drop box. I noticed a paper taped to the bulletin board stating that there was a boil water alert. E-coli had been found in the water supply!:E

Luckily, we always bring our own water "just in case". However, our neighbor AND the campground host had hooked up to the CG water. Should I have said something? Is it okay to shower with?

I certainly wouldn't want to give it to my dogs or clean our fish with it. What are your opinions or knowledge on the subject?

  • I take jugs of bottled water with me for drinking, coffee and cooking, not only for bacteria but for taste. Also for the cup that holds my teeth at night. I don't worry about the shower - I'm waterproof.
  • We are about to begin the fall camping season. That place is not on the list.

Things happen. I wouldn't let one incident keep me from going there. We do carry our own water. - Thanks
  • Most E-Coli is harmless. I assume the CG posted a warning because it was one of the not so harmless strains. I would question how the e-coli got into the water system. Well water shouldn't have it nor should city water systems that draw off the underground water tables. Is a CG pulling water from a lake or stream and not treating it?
  • JesLookin, we were at Josie Creek Campground near Ladysmith. This is the first time it's happened. We rarely use the CG water source. So glad we filled the tanks this time.

Truly, it's a wonderful little county campground. Wonderful fishing lake/flowage. Don't let it scare you away, just carry your own water!
  • With e.coli a single organism in a sample is considered unsafe and it can be plant or animal sourced e.coli and it is treated the same. Showering is not going to be a problem, only using the water for drinking or brushing your teeth.
If you have suspect water in your holding tank you can add a teaspon of bleach for every 10 gallons of water and it will kill the bacteria.

    Where were you?
  • I always carry full tanks just incase I have to dry camp
  • Almost makes me want to get a Katadyn KFT Expedition filter (expensive at $1500, but supposedly can be used on almost any brackish water.)
  • The campground host should have known. We only drink bottled water but that does not work for showers.

We stayed at a provincial park this year where therewas a boil water advisory. The government inspectors are very strict and in this case the man at the park in charge of the purification system said the park water was safe. All the staff living there used it. Apparently this insp. was insecure about his testing and was closing off water in parks unnecessarily. We used it...no problems. I am in no way saying ignore posts, only commenting on this one area.

we ran into the same thing a number of years ago at a park in NM except there was no notice taped to the bulletin board and no warning at the check-in desk. while waiting for the check-in process to be completed I started pawing through a number of attraction brochures that were piled on a table by the desk and found the e-coli warning buried beneath them. since then we never travel without a full or nearly full tank of fresh water. ya just never know.
