I'm sure the OP can build and maintain a decent camp fire and not smoke out the whole loop! I too love a good camp fire with the family sitting around it and enjoying the experience. Been doing that since I was a kid back in the late '60's..
Problem is, the majority of "campers" these days don't have a clue how to build and maintain a decent camp fire... ;)
At least the ones that always seem to be around me! ha, ha!
It's mostly just luck of the draw of where the wind is blowing and who you have camping next to you, and of course, every single fire is going to expel 'smoke', but I do have to agree with the other's that when you throw your trash in the fire pit and then light it up and oh yeah, that smell is just awesome for your neighbors!! Thank you for doing that fellow camper!
Anyway, a no win situation for sure...
I don't understand the no propane fires... Even with burn bans, in our WA State parks, you can use your propane fire pit.. You can't burn a charcoal BBQ, but you can use propane even with a full on burn ban going on..
Oh well, I love my camp fire too, but in the end, you just gotta do what you gotta do..
