I think I would have passed on having a beer with the group in the first place. And we only have the BF's word on what was said. What may have lead up to that, maybe nothing, and it is as the Bf said. Or maybe the BF and one of the group got into it, and he just wanted to get out. Was not there I have no knowledge.
Yes I read that article too and I'm pretty choosy about who I share a beer with, LOL. Does sound dicey under the current circumstances.
