Campground manners

We just returned from a four day trip that was made less than enjoyable by a huge family group camped around us.

First let me say, we have a particular favorite campsite at one of our state parks. It is a site that backs right up to the lake and is in the only loop in the park that has full hookups. As soon as the reservation period opens, we make our plans for the summer trips.

We arrived at our site on Monday morning, and the sites on either side of us were vacant. The signs on the posts indicated that both were reserved for that night and the following two. About mid afternoon a Class A carrying approximately eight people pulled in on one side. Shortly after that a tent trailer pulled in on the other side. They set up and then another vehicle came in and a tent was pitched. Across the street there were three more sites occupied by three tents on each. The space on the other side of the A had a tent and a power boat in it.

All of a sudden our site became the major pathway to the one with the motor home. All told there were about 30 or 35 people congregated on that site. Every time they wanted to go back to one of the other sites, they crossed ours. We finally resorted to telling them that they should use the roadway for their path. The kids were the easiest to deal with. They just needed to know where their boundaries were. The adults on the other hand..... One lady, when I politely requested that she not use our site as her walkway, informed me that this was " public property". I told her I was aware of that, but that this was NOT her campsite.

When we started camping with our kids 50 years ago, we taught them that they were not to go in anyone else's campsite unless they had permission. Apparently this no longer is the practice.

Off my soapbox.
