We have always had good luck with small privately owned campgrounds for overnights on the road. Most with mostly seasonal residents and a few itinerant sites for overnighters. Usually find them through Passport America.
On weeknights they are usually thinly populated. We hit one on the night they were having their annual pig roast/pot luck - a great dinner for $5 each! At another we hit the Friday night fish fry, another great dinner. At both of these we were welcomed with a lot of questions about our rig; "are you full timers?"; etc. The owners usually go out of their way to accommodate us since we tell them ahead of time that we are 60' long with a heavy duty truck.
