Many tow vehicles these days are wired in such a way that the hot lead to the trailer is only energized when the ignition switch is ON.
If you test yours and find that it isn't wired that way, just install a 50 amp continuous duty relay in the wire, and connect it to a source that will energize the relay when the switch is ON.
Then you will never have to worry about draining the tow vehicle battery while parked.
To directly answer the OP, yes you can leave the trailer hooked up while parked, no it will not damage anything.
