"I am curious where people camp who run their generators for much of the day." I think they camp right next door to me. :(
We frequent many of the dry campgrounds around our neck of the woods. Mostly managed by State, Forest Service or P.G.& E.(utility company). Most of these campgrounds have "quiet times" where generator use is not allowed. I have found that the quiet times are pretty much while one would be sleeping(10pm to 8am). So anytime we may be outside enjoying a cup of morning coffee, or while enjoying a nice dinner at the picnic table, the potential is there for a neighbor to fire up his generator.
I understand the use of a quiet generator in the middle of the day for an hour or so to bring the batteries up a bit, but what I notice more often than not is the use of the noisy generators to make coffee, use the microwave, or run the TV.
These dry camping areas that we frequent are all campgrounds with picnic tables, fire pits and designated sites. Most all of these sites are in the woods along a river or lake where, in my opinion, the generator noise is not a part of the ambience.
