Can I find a last minute Labor Day camp site?

I have never camped on labor day, but decided I want to go next weekend. How full are campgrounds typically on Labor day? I don't have a reservation, so what are my chances for finding a spot at a State Park or COE within 2 hours of Tulsa?

Do any of you have advice for what I need to do to make next weekend an enjoyable camping experience? I am looking at Friday afternoon arrival and Monday afternoon departure. I still work full time, so I don't have much vacation time to pad either end of the weekend. It would be me, my wife, and the two dogs. I mainly want to stay in camp, walk the dogs, sit back and relax and do a little grilling.

Thanks in advance.

  • Most campgrounds are full on my end even the less than stellar ones.

Check around reserveamerica.com and Craig's List to see if you can find a cancellation.

  • I usually do not camp on holidays and weekends, I prefer the campground to be quiet and serene. (meaning less drunks and kids..But most down in this area are full and reservations for the holiday should have been made probably months ago.
  • I usually try to avoid peak times, so don't have any trouble finding a spot. I would hate to hitch up and get to a favorite campsite just to be turned away. I finally decided I need to go when I can go, and for a working man, that includes some of the big holidays.
  • I got lucky and found a cancelation at a KOA in MN ...most places I called said they didn't have room for another tent let alone an RV.
