can you reduce 50 amp service to 30 amp?

I have found a rv campground that I would like to use, however, they only have 50 amp service, and I need 30 amp service. Mgr tells me that he can use a reducer and I will be ok. Is this a good idea? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks

Tom

  • And you can further reduce down from the 30A to 15A for use when visiting the mother-in-law.
  • Thanks for the info, will get a adapter, good idea to carry it with me.
  • Yes you can with the proper adapter like this 50 to 30 Adapter Just a note with the adapter you will still only have 30 amps available, but everything should work just like you were plugged in to a 30 amp outlet. check Wallmart, they usually have them
  • Should not be a problem.
It will still be able to supply 50 amps. So just don't go crazy plugging in electrical appliances or you will trip a breaker in your rig.
  • The adapter is a good thing to carry.

In heavy used parks, the 30 amp outlet can be worn.

It that case, we use the 50 amp outlet with the adapter.
  • 50 AMP is the draw capacity of the outlet and not related to the power coming out. A 220v outlet would be a different matter.

We have come across RV parks that only had 50 amp receptacles so we needed the adapter. Easy to find at any RV supply source.
  • Yes, you can.
There are adapters you can buy that adapter a 50 amp plug down to the 30 amp plug that your unit has.
