Car Dollys

I have a MINI Cooper Clubman automatic (2013), I would like to tow. Being an automatic a tow dolly looks like my only choice. But with the low front end which one will I be able to use? Any suggestions.

  • And now an answer from a real MINI owner ;)

Yes, you can tow the automatic with either a dolly or trailer. When I towed my 05, I used a Demco tow dolly but the hubby made a modification to allow for low clearance. As you know, Minis tend to sit lower than other cars. He removed the ramps so they wouldn't kick up into the side panels and used wooden block with the ramps to load the car. The ramps were stored in the boot of the car during travel.

Here's a picture of my 05 MCSCa on a tow dolly

And some of my 06 GP, which was lower than a standard Mini

Feel free to contact me by PM if you have any questions. Cheers!
  • I have a Kar Kaddy 3 and I tow a 2012 Prius. Before we bought ours, the dealer let us load up and test it first.
  • I have a Tow Master. I have ramps and 2x8s - I prefer the 2x8s as they are easier to move around. Solves the low clearance problem of my Civic and TSX(Acura).
  • The best dolly would be a Kar Kaddy which are designed for use with almost any wheel base.
  • Before considering a dolly, get the car's manual out and read the section on "recreational towing" or similar. Not all automatics can be dolly towed.

In answer to your question, I used to dolly tow a car with a low front end. I made a couple of 2 foot lengths of 2x10. I laid them on the ramp about 1 foot up, extending out behind the dolly about 1 foot. That raised the front end of the car enough to get onto or off of the dolly. I had 2 screws in the underside of the end that went on the dolly ramp that went into holes in the ramp. That kept the 2x10's from sliding farther up, or off of, the ramp.
  • not sure of the trans that the car had, but the guy we got our winnebago from towed a mini and he had been told that it could not be towed 4 down! If need be could send him a mail and ask what the trans is. yes it was a 2012 or so.
