carefree awning conversion to crank type

Does anyone have a carefree awning that they converted from spring-loaded type to crank type? Still manual but not spring loaded? I have a spring loaded and thought about converting to electric, but it will be over a grand... am at Good Sam rally and carefree dealer suggested the crank.. can purchase installed for less than $200. Does anyone have any experience with crank? The spring type is aggravating for a short person traveling alone. If I let it slip, then I have to get someone to help pull it out and I have to be on a ladder.. Comments from anyone with the crank type on real ease of use are appreciated. I tried the demo, but I am hoping for real world experience.

  • wannavolunteerFT,

I did exactly what you are contemplating on my main 20' awning when one of the springs broke. I got the kit from PPL. The length is not a problem, I like it.
    Good luck.

    dreamer.
  • I forgot to mention my awning is 15 ft. does that length make it harder to use? or still much better than spring loaded?

wgriswold, price is $165 installed.... kit itself is just over $100, tech will come to my RV in rally parking and install on site.
  • I did the conversion because of a problem with the spring system. Easy to do and the kit comes with good instructions. Just be sure to follow the directions exactly for unloading the tension on the springs. IIRC the cost was closer to $100 than $200. Try looking at PPL for prices.

I agree that the crank system is easy to use.
  • Our trailer has the crank system, very easy to use. The hand crank is easily adjustable for length.
Nice to tighten up the awning when it is extended.
I much prefer it over the spring loaded type.
