CB Radio Equipment?

For those of you that are using CB Radios, I just picked up a nice one at WalMark for around $80.00. It's a Midland 75-822 and it looks like it a good one. Does anyone have any comments or have used it?

I figure my 2m Yaesu Ham radio should take care of me ok, but I just wanted a little backup coverage when out of any repeater sites.

Channel 9 and 19 are the emergency channels.

Thanks,

  • I have never seen a CB hand held that was really worth having. The best that can be said is, it is better than nothing. That is also, IMO, the best that can be said about FRS radios For best safety performance, get a good Cobra radio from a truck stop, then get the best antenna you can find (probably at the same truck stop). Connect the radio power leads directly to the battery of the vehicle, mount the radio securely, and tune the antenna to 1.5:1 SWR. Don't worry about getting it lower than that, it can be done, but there is no gain in performance involved.
Channel 9 is the FCC designated Emergency Channel. Channel 19 is the channel for mobile use in many areas of the country, but it has no official designation.
I have Maxon radios, with the built in Weather channels. I need to get busy and get one mounted in the motorhome, and one in the Jeep.

  • Not since Smokey and the Bandit in 1977. I was driving thru Wisconsin and talking to friends in another car, reporting on a "Smokey" sighting. When Smokey took an exit, I said "Good Night, Mr. Smokey". The next transmission said "Good Night, Mr. blue and white Ford". That ended breaking the speed limit.

  • I have had one for 5 yrs. Use it to help me back up into sites by connecting to my truck cb radio. Beats yelling out the window to someone. The range is limited even if you have it connected to an external antenna on top of your truck. The short atenna that screws into the top is effective for very short ranges, less than a 1/8 of mile. Without using an external antenna on top of your truck you will not be able to talk or receive to anyone as you travel down the road.
