I'm ambivalent about the Dyson. I caught it on sale over the holidays with the intention of replacing the canister vac we've been using in the MH. Much better for storage and ease of use, and super on hard floors. However, I'm not impressed that it cleans as deep in the carpet.
I brought it into the house and tried it on a couple of our rugs, and its performance is lacking compared to our upright. Regardless, it's pretty handy and will get the job done in most situations.
There are similar models on the market that are cheaper. I can't speak to their performance, but I do subscribe to the comparison another poster made to the Bose marketing/pricing model. At least $50 of that price is name.
