Changing out TV

I've had it with the hardwired 12 volt tv that came with our motorhome. It was great while it worked. The first issue has been that its in a bracket that allows you to swing it out with a lot of storage space behind it. The cable easily would get pinched, breaking the wire and blowing the inline fuse. I was able to repair it. Now it stopped working altogether. I'm switching it out with a 110 tv. Had a problem finding a 32" tv that was thin enough to fit into the bracket. Finally found one online through Vizio. Have it on order and hope to receive it soon. Hopefully fits in there ok.

We don't really need a 12v tv. We don't dry camp a lot and when we do, we don't watch tv. If we do, we can crank on the generator and watch it. Just one less thing to worry about.

If you have directv at home you can use their app to stream whatever you might have recorded on your home DVR as well as on-demand tv. If you have an ATT account there is no data charge since ATT owns Directv. You can also download from your DVR to your phone, pad or other device to watch offline. Then just get an adapter to play from the device to an HDMI port on the TV.

We do not pay for any tv. We are strictly internet based.

Thanks...yeah I haven't felt the need for an inverter, yet. Like I said, if we are not on hookups, we rarely will watch a tv. We don't watch tv at home. We watch everything on Netflix, Prime or Youtube. With Netflix and Prime, they allow you to download some of the movies and shows so you aren't using bandwidth. We can do that on our phones, ipads, or laptops.
  • I replaced our old style 13 inch 12 volt TV with a 26 inch flat panel 120 volt TV a few years back.

I removed the old TV and the roll out shelf it was mounted on.

Then installed a swing arm mount for the new TV.

The new much larger TV just fits into the cabinet on the diagonal.

I made a new door for the cabinet, using the old roll up door as the center panel.

I also added a 600 watt PSW inverter to supply 120volts for the TV and our DirecTV receiver. We also use it to charge phones, laptops and camera batteries. 600 watts is overkill, but I figured we might need it in the future.

The inverter had to be mounted close to the house batteries to minimize voltage drop in the 12 volt feed cables. This setup has worked out great for us.

Brian - They sell a great 600W PSW AIMS 12VDC Power Inverter. That is what we have here for all of our low wattage things like the TV etc... I have the 20inch VIZIO HDTV in my camper and use a BATWING antenna on top...

When we are camping running a few of the 120V items off of it is usually only around 300WATTs being consumed...

We have our camping day/night all planed to reduce my battery bank to its 50% charge state around 8AM the next morning. Then I will run the generator during that time to recharge my batteries back up to their 90% charge state which takes around three hours of generator run time... We usually are camping in the Natl Forest somewhere that allows the generator use from 8AM to 8PM. I image your Natl Forest areas do the same thing. They all use to be 8-10AM and then again 4PM to 7PM. ALot now allows them 8AM to 8PM and never after 8PM... Gotta have a Power Inverter for those times...

AMAZON has the 600WATT PSW for around $150...
